CYBER SEX

With the advancement in technology, the internet is rapidly changing our choices, preferences, and the way we think. Besides helping us in making research and finding information, it is also introducing us to sex evolution. This evolution has come quick with its advancing effects on humanity which is positive and negative. This has given life to a vice called CYBER SEX.

Cyber sex refers to anything sexual in nature happening in a digital space. In most cases two or more people engage in sexual experience remotely by describing their actions to each other in writing via sexually explicit messages inform of texts, images, and videos. The different forms of cyber sex include sexting, phone sex, camming, online role playing, virtual reality games.

It is evident by research that the biggest consumers of sexual content on the internet are the young generation aged 12 to 30 years. In 2021, sex, sexual orientation and relationship content were being redefined and created faster than educational information being disseminated to the masses. In some countries, laws have been put in place to protect the population from consuming highly explicit asexual content on the internet. The advancement in technology has played a key role in promoting cyber-sex whereby several platforms are being created and developed with the main objective of promoting online sex.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, people made use of the internet only when need be but from 2020 when the digital space was a necessity, a lot of online sexual platforms started to emerge. These included games, websites, social chats with the key objective of ensuring partners stay connected given the COVID-19 lockdown that caused many families to be apart. To the developers, their objective was good for their business, but a lot of social factors were not considered in terms of moral values of the society. This caused a great generational degradation given the fact that the biggest consumers and users of these sexual platforms are the young generation who are now actively involved in early sexual activities. In most African family settings, a person can only be exposed to sexual content and activities when 18 years and above which is not the case currently.

The major cause of cybersex has been attributed to decreased social contact in daily life and easy of communication in the digital space without proper content restriction. However, the health experts give some positive credit about this vice being one means of eliminating the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) given the fact that there is no physical contact. To some section of the population, cyber sex is considered very convenient since it can take place anywhere, anytime, and randomly. All that a person requires is a gadget and internet connection. Meanwhile it has been proven that sex on the internet is significant and high revenue generating activity where people go to the internet in search of pornography, sexual partner or to conduct online sex chats with others.

The negative impacts of cyber sex are intense that once a person becomes an addict or victim, if not given the necessary assistance, they become a danger to themselves and the community at large. Some of the dangers associated with cyber sex include; no guarantee for privacy, there are legal consequences around forms of virtual sex, high addiction levels, mistrust among partners, leads to acts of masturbation and many others.

However, some remedies are being put in place to help victims which include establishing counselling centers with qualified experts to offer guidance, rehabilitation homes are being setup for victims. The religious and cultural leaders have also come in play by condemning the vice and strongly denouncing it.

Conclusively, Cyber sex is a silent technological weapon that is rapidly consuming the society and calls for collective efforts to control and manage the vice among the young generation.

This is real and so many people not only the teenagers but adults as well have fallen victim of cyber sex. However,I highly critic the act and firmly urge parents to watch out for their children, the kind of things they watch, the kind of literature they read, the kind of friends they hang around with. Be close to your children and teach them that certain things ain’t just right.
